The typical projector for home theater use has an incredibly bright light bulb inside. Sony has announced that it is now shipping the first 3LCD laser light source projector in the industry. The projector is called the VPL-FHZ55.
The projector was announced back in June and Sony is now shipping it. The projector uses a laser light source that eliminates most issues associated with conventional lamp-based projectors. The projector promises 4000 lumens of color light output with a resolution of 1920 x 1200.
The projector uses a blue laser as a light source that excites a phosphorus material that creates white light. That white light is then delivered to the 3 LCD optical system to generate full-color. The projector is only available through authorized Sony resellers. I’m sure the projector carries a premium price, but the official price is unknown.
