A couple of weeks ago we heard that Nest, the makers of the Nest Thermostat, were going to launch a new smart smoke detector, the device is called the Nest Protect and it is now official.
The Nest Protect comes with some interesting features over existing smoke alarms, it connects to your smartphone or tablet and will provide you with email notifications and low battery alerts.
One thing that the Nest Protect is trying to eliminate is false alarms, when I am allowed to cook in the kitchen I usually manage to set at least one of our smoke alarms off.
The Nest Protect will alert you when there is smoke detected, and if it is just your toast burning, you can wave you hand at the device and the alarm will stop.
It also gives your alerts before the alarm is sounded, and if you have more than one device, they can be connected and it will tell you which Nest Protect around your house is detecting the smoke, have a look at the video below.
The Nest Protect is available to pre-order in the US and the UK it will retail for $129 in the US and $109 in the UK, the first devices are expected to ship in November.
