Nest is well known for their Nest Thermostat, and now the company is working on a new product for the home, a smart smoke detector. According to Nest, this new smoke detector will eventually end up being the smartest smoke detector available.
The Nest smoke detector will be able to detect any trace of smoke or a fire in your home, and on top of that, it will be able to detect and also monitor carbon dioxide levels.

The device will be called the Nest Protect, and you will be able to control and monitor the smoke detector with your smartphone, tablet, or computer.
Advanced Features of Nest Protect
Nest Protect is designed to offer more than just basic smoke detection. It incorporates advanced sensors that can differentiate between fast-burning and smoldering fires, providing more accurate alerts. Additionally, the device features a split-spectrum sensor that uses two wavelengths of light to detect smoke, which helps in identifying different types of fires more effectively.
Another significant feature is its ability to monitor carbon monoxide (CO) levels. Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas that can be deadly if not detected in time. Nest Protect ensures that your home is safe from this invisible threat by continuously monitoring CO levels and alerting you if they become dangerous.
Integration with Smart Home Ecosystem
Nest Protect is not just a standalone device; it integrates seamlessly with other smart home products. For instance, if you have a Nest Thermostat, the two devices can communicate with each other. In the event of a fire, the Nest Protect can instruct the thermostat to turn off the heating system to prevent the spread of smoke.
Moreover, Nest Protect can be integrated with other smart home systems like Google Home and Amazon Alexa. This allows you to use voice commands to check the status of your smoke detector or to silence false alarms. The device also features a “Pathlight” function, which lights up your way in the dark when it detects motion, adding an extra layer of convenience and safety.
User-Friendly Features
Nest Protect is designed with user-friendliness in mind. The device conducts regular self-tests and sends you a monthly report via the Nest app, so you always know that it’s working correctly. If the batteries are running low, Nest Protect will send an alert to your phone, eliminating the annoying low-battery chirps that traditional smoke detectors make.
The device also features a “Heads-Up” alert, which gives you an early warning in a calm, human voice before it sounds a full alarm. This can be particularly useful in preventing false alarms from cooking smoke or steam from the shower.
Availability and Future Updates
There are no details as yet on when the Nest Protect will be available, although the company behind the device said we can expect it soon. Nest has a history of rolling out updates and new features even after the initial release, so users can expect continuous improvements and added functionalities over time.
As soon as we get some more information, we will let you guys know.
