Microsoft has this week rolled out new features to its SkyDrive service, which has added new notifications to your SkyDrive Live Tile view within Microsoft’s latest Windows 8 operating system.
Microsoft first released their SkyDrive application for Windows and RT back in October 2012, and the new features released this week now enable it to display notifications on the live tile Start Screen, when you add new files to your SkyDrive storage.
Microsoft explains: “Starting today, the SkyDrive app from the Windows Store will start showing you notifications on the live tile when you add new files to your SkyDrive. Now the tile for the SkyDrive app will be useful for more than just launching the app, by providing at-a-glance info on what’s going on in your SkyDrive. Whenever you add new files to SkyDrive, the app tile shows you relevant details. If you add a document, you’ll see the document name, along with when it was added, and what folder it’s in. If you add photos, the tile gives you a nice view of those photos.”
Enhanced User Experience
The introduction of these new features significantly enhances the user experience by making it easier to keep track of your files without having to open the SkyDrive app. This is particularly useful for users who frequently upload documents, photos, and other files to their SkyDrive storage. The live tile now acts as a dynamic dashboard, providing real-time updates and making file management more intuitive and efficient.
For example, if you are working on a collaborative project and frequently upload new versions of a document, the live tile will display the latest document name, the time it was added, and the folder it resides in. This allows you to quickly verify that the latest version has been uploaded without needing to navigate through the app. Similarly, if you upload a batch of photos from a recent trip, the live tile will showcase these photos, giving you a quick visual confirmation that your upload was successful.
Integration with Windows 8 Ecosystem
The new SkyDrive live tile notifications are seamlessly integrated into the Windows 8 ecosystem, leveraging the operating system’s unique live tile feature to provide a more cohesive user experience. This integration is part of Microsoft’s broader strategy to create a unified and interconnected environment across its services and devices.
Windows 8’s live tiles are designed to provide users with real-time information at a glance, and the SkyDrive updates are a perfect example of this functionality in action. By displaying notifications directly on the Start Screen, users can stay informed about their SkyDrive activity without interrupting their workflow. This is particularly beneficial for users who rely on SkyDrive for both personal and professional use, as it allows them to manage their files more effectively and stay organized.
Moreover, the live tile notifications are customizable, allowing users to choose which types of notifications they want to see. This level of customization ensures that the live tile remains relevant and useful to each individual user, catering to their specific needs and preferences.
The new features are rolling out this week so you should see the new info on your SkyDrive tile very soon. For more information on the new SkyDrive Live Tile jump over to the website for details.
