I can’t play the guitar but if I ever decide to try you can bet that I am springing for the guitar with lasers on it. I don’t even know how to record music onto a computer from a live instrument, but just to say a guitar has lasers is worth it to me. This system is called the Laser Pitch Detector or LPD and it can determine the pitch of a string before you pluck it.
The lasers measure the distance from the bridge to the fingers and can then determine what note the string will make. Apparently, if you are hooking a guitar to a computer for recording or MIDI work the 12ms latency of some recorders of the type makes getting a good recording hard to do.
The LPD has no latency and you get perfect and easy recordings. The system should be commercially available next year some time at an undisclosed price. The LPD can also interface via Bluetooth so it might be able to work with an app on your smartphone too. This sounds really cool.
