Full Circle has been designed by Sanghyun Jeong and Jun-Tae Park from Korea and has been shortlisted from more than 3,000 entries into the recent Design Boom Competition.
Designers thoughts and explanation:
Full Circle’ is a compact-sized city bike that has a large wheel size (508mm, 20”) like a sprinter minivelo. This specification makes this bike easy to navigate through a big city like Seoul, while most compact bikes that have small wheels have difficulty. In short, this is a small bike with big wheels. ‘Full Circle’ does not have chains, but a free wheel gear directly connected to its pedals.
It just looks like a fixed gear, but it isn’t. ‘Full Circle’ has a very simple folding structure, so the rider can easily and quickly fold and unfold the body in a busy downtown, even on the subway. Most of its parts can be folded, including the saddle and handle bars.
Innovative Design and Practicality
The Full Circle bike stands out not only for its unique design but also for its practicality. The large wheels provide a smoother ride over uneven city streets, which is a significant advantage over traditional compact bikes with smaller wheels. This makes it an ideal choice for urban commuters who need a reliable and efficient mode of transportation. The absence of chains reduces maintenance needs and eliminates the common issue of chain slippage, making the bike more user-friendly.
Moreover, the folding mechanism is designed to be intuitive and quick, allowing riders to transition seamlessly between riding and carrying the bike. This is particularly useful in cities with extensive public transportation systems, where commuters often need to switch between biking and taking the subway or bus. The compact size when folded means it can be easily stored in small apartments or offices, addressing the common issue of limited storage space in urban environments.
Environmental Impact and Future Prospects
In addition to its practical benefits, the Full Circle bike also has a positive environmental impact. By providing a convenient and efficient alternative to cars, it encourages more people to opt for cycling, thereby reducing traffic congestion and lowering carbon emissions. This aligns with global efforts to promote sustainable urban mobility and combat climate change.
Looking ahead, the success of the Full Circle bike in the Design Boom Competition could pave the way for further innovations in urban cycling. As cities continue to grow and evolve, the demand for versatile and eco-friendly transportation solutions is likely to increase. Designers like Sanghyun Jeong and Jun-Tae Park are at the forefront of this movement, pushing the boundaries of what is possible in bike design and functionality.
The Full Circle bike is a remarkable example of how thoughtful design can enhance the urban commuting experience. Its combination of large wheels, chainless operation, and easy folding mechanism make it a standout choice for city dwellers. As more people recognize the benefits of cycling, innovations like the Full Circle bike will play a crucial role in shaping the future of urban transportation.
