If you have ever wanted to build your very own smartwatch you might be interested in the new project published to Imgur which details and provides everything you need and how to build your very own smartwatch complete with colour screen from scratch.
The rechargeable internal battery is capable of providing up to 7 days of use on a 2.5 hour charge and even has a charging cradle. The smartwatch is still currently under development and more features are being added on a regular basis. In total the smartwatch cost roughly $50 to make, although if Samson was going to resell them due to the economies of scale he would need to price the smartwatch $250. “as a rule of thumb, for a product to be successful and make a profit, you would have to sell it for four or five times the cost of the goods. So in my case (assuming no discounts due to the economies of scale) I would have to charge somewhere between $200 and $250 to make a profit.”
Samson March creator of the DIY smartwatch explain more about the project : “I decided sometime last year that I wanted to make a smart watch from scratch. I am an electrical engineer and product designer by day, so this was a fun side project that had been rolling around in my head for a while now. Also, this project is full open sourced, the below repo has all of the build files you would need to make your own.”
– Circuit board files
– Schematics
– Bill of Materials
– All the code
– STL files for all the prints
