Jerry Jaksha has created a very natural wooden iPhone stand using a bent wood laminating technique he mastered nearly 15 years ago to bend strips of wood to create a unique iPhone docking station.
In his wood bending technique, Jaksha uses wet wood and a couple of clamps together with Gorilla Glue to create the curved wood pieces which make up the basis for his iPhone stand design. Watch the video after the jump to see him take you through the creation process.
The Art of Wood Bending
Wood bending is an ancient craft that has been used for centuries to create everything from furniture to musical instruments. The technique involves soaking wood in water to make it pliable, then bending it into the desired shape and allowing it to dry. This process can be quite intricate, requiring patience and precision. Jaksha’s method is a modern take on this traditional technique, utilizing contemporary materials like Gorilla Glue to ensure a strong and lasting bond.
Jaksha explains: “Narrow (up to 1.5″ wide) wood can be clamped with the poly stretch wrap, and easily held in place until dry.” This method allows for the creation of sleek, modern designs that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing. The use of poly stretch wrap is particularly innovative, as it provides a secure hold without damaging the wood.
DIY Bent Wood iPhone Stand
So if you have a little time spare this weekend, perhaps you can try and make your very own Bent Wood iPhone Stand. The process is straightforward but does require some basic woodworking skills and tools. Here are some additional tips to help you get started:
1. Choose the Right Wood: Softwoods like pine are easier to bend but may not be as durable. Hardwoods like oak or maple are more challenging to work with but offer greater strength and longevity.
2. Soak the Wood Properly: Ensure the wood is thoroughly soaked to make it pliable. This can take anywhere from a few hours to overnight, depending on the type and thickness of the wood.
3. Use Quality Glue: Gorilla Glue is recommended for its strong bonding properties, but other wood glues can also be effective.
4. Clamp Securely: Use clamps to hold the wood in place while it dries. The poly stretch wrap can help distribute pressure evenly and prevent the wood from slipping.
The video below provides a step-by-step guide to the process, making it easy for even novice woodworkers to follow along.
Creating your own bent wood iPhone stand can be a rewarding project that not only results in a functional piece of art but also hones your woodworking skills. Plus, it’s a great way to recycle scrap wood and create something unique and personalized.
