If you have a non-functioning Atari 2600 games console that you would like to breathe a little life into, you may be interested in a new Arduino project which has transformed a retro Atari 2600 into an electronic drink racer and timer.
Check out the video below to see the Cider Racer 2600 project in action, which was created by YouTuber “MonkeyBOX Entertainment” for an annual Christmas party.
Project Components and Construction
The project consists of an Atari 2600 fitted with an Arduino Mega microcontroller together with 2 x 4-digit 7-segment displays, some LEDs, wires, and other miscellaneous parts. The Arduino Mega is a powerful microcontroller board based on the ATmega2560, which provides ample I/O pins and memory for complex projects like this one.
A pair of custom coasters were constructed as drink plates using force-sensitive resistors, soft springs, rubber actuators, and three layers of CNC-cut materials: acrylic bottom plate, brushed aluminum center, and acrylic spacer, explains the Arduino blog. These coasters are designed to detect the presence and weight of a drink, which is crucial for the timing and racing functionality of the project.
How It Works
When a drink is placed on one of the coasters, the force-sensitive resistor detects the weight and sends a signal to the Arduino Mega. The microcontroller then starts a timer, which is displayed on the 7-segment displays. The LEDs provide visual feedback, indicating the status of the race or timer. This setup allows for a fun and interactive way to time drink consumption or even create drinking games.
The project is not only a creative way to repurpose an old Atari 2600 but also a great example of how modern technology can be integrated with retro hardware. The use of CNC-cut materials for the coasters adds a professional touch, making the project both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
Applications and Future Enhancements
While the Cider Racer 2600 was created for a Christmas party, its applications can extend far beyond that. It could be used at various social gatherings, bars, or even as a fun family game. The project also opens up possibilities for future enhancements. For instance, adding wireless connectivity could allow for remote monitoring and control via a smartphone app. Additional sensors could be integrated to measure other parameters like temperature or liquid levels.
Moreover, the project serves as an excellent educational tool for those interested in learning about electronics, programming, and hardware integration. It demonstrates how different components can work together to create a cohesive and functional system.
