Apple announced three new iPhones at their press event yesterday, the iPhone Xs, the iPhone Xs Max, and the iPhone Xr.
All three handsets are powered by the new Apple A12 Bionic processor, which is designed to deliver superior performance and efficiency. The design of the handsets is very similar, featuring edge-to-edge displays and a notch at the top for the front-facing camera and Face ID technology. The iPhone Xr has a 6.1-inch LCD display, the iPhone XS a 5.8-inch OLED display, and the iPhone Xs Max a 6.5-inch OLED display.
Display and Design
The iPhone Xr’s 6.1-inch Liquid Retina display is Apple’s most advanced LCD, offering true-to-life colors and a wide color gamut. Despite being the more affordable option, the iPhone Xr does not compromise on quality. The iPhone XS and XS Max, on the other hand, feature Super Retina OLED displays, which provide deeper blacks and more vibrant colors. The OLED technology also supports HDR10 and Dolby Vision, making these devices ideal for media consumption.
The design of all three models includes aerospace-grade aluminum and durable glass, with the iPhone XS and XS Max featuring surgical-grade stainless steel. Performance and Features
The A12 Bionic chip is a significant upgrade from its predecessor, featuring a 6-core CPU, a 4-core GPU, and an 8-core Neural Engine. This allows for faster app launches, smoother graphics, and more efficient machine learning processes. The Neural Engine is particularly beneficial for augmented reality (AR) applications and advanced photography features.
Speaking of photography, the iPhone XS and XS Max come with a dual-camera system, featuring a 12MP wide-angle and a 12MP telephoto lens. These cameras support Smart HDR, which captures more detail in highlights and shadows, and enhanced bokeh effects for portrait mode. The iPhone Xr, while having a single 12MP wide-angle camera, still benefits from many of these advanced features, including Smart HDR and portrait mode with depth control.
Face ID has also been improved, making it faster and more secure. This facial recognition technology is used for unlocking the phone, making payments, and accessing secure apps. All three models are water and dust resistant, with the iPhone XS and XS Max rated at IP68, meaning they can withstand submersion in up to 2 meters of water for 30 minutes. The iPhone Xr is rated at IP67, capable of withstanding submersion in up to 1 meter of water for 30 minutes.
Pricing for the new iPhones starts at £749 for the Xr, $999 for the XS, and $1099 for the XS Max. Pre-orders for the XS handset start tomorrow, and the devices will go on sale next Friday, the 21st of September. The iPhone XR goes on sale in October.
