Amazon has rolled out a new gadget that is made to work with its AmazonFresh grocery service. The new gadget is called the Amazon Dash and it makes it easy to enter the items you need to order without having to resort to typing in products or searching online. Dash has a built-in LED scanner and a voice recording function.
The idea is that you can take the WiFi connected Dash to your pantry, scan the barcodes of the items you need, and the Dash will upload them to the computer automatically. If you need an item and don’t have a barcode or need something like fresh vegetables that don’t have a barcode, this is where the mic comes in. You can record what you need on the device and presumably it uploads your recordings to your shopping list so someone at Amazon knows what you want.
It also appears that the Dash is free for people in the AmazonFresh market. Fresh is still very limited in availability with the service only available in parts of California and Washington. It also seems that you can order items that aren’t part of Fresh using the scanner. One of the videos shows a person ordering guitar strings.
