We have seen quite a few steampunk gadgets and mods here at Geeky Gadgets, but nothing like this—a whole house given the steampunk treatment by its owners, Bruce and Melanie Rosenbaum.
Everything, including the light switches, has been given a steampunk look. Check out the photos below, as well as lots more at the link below.
The Vision Behind the Steampunk House
Bruce and Melanie Rosenbaum started ModVic (Modern Victorian) Home Restoration in June 2007 and have now moved onto steampunk Home Design. ModVic’s mission is to authentically restore historic Victorian homes (1850 – 1910) to their original beauty and richness while completely modernizing the home’s systems, functional layout, and conveniences for the family of today. Bruce and Melanie also love the steampunk design aesthetic of combining the best of Victorian high design and craftsmanship with modern functionality and usefulness.
The couple’s passion for steampunk is evident in every corner of their home. From the intricate gears and cogs that adorn the walls to the vintage typewriters repurposed as computer keyboards, their house is a living museum of steampunk culture. The attention to detail is astounding, with each room offering a unique blend of Victorian elegance and modern technology.
Steampunk Elements in Modern Living
One of the most striking features of the Rosenbaum’s steampunk house is the seamless integration of modern technology with Victorian-era aesthetics. For instance, the kitchen boasts a state-of-the-art refrigerator encased in a wooden cabinet adorned with brass fittings and antique handles. The living room features a flat-screen TV hidden behind a vintage painting that slides open with the pull of a lever.
Even the bathrooms have not been spared from the steampunk treatment. Clawfoot tubs, antique faucets, and exposed copper piping create a sense of stepping back in time, while modern amenities like heated floors and high-efficiency toilets ensure comfort and convenience.
The Rosenbaums have also incorporated steampunk elements into their home office. A custom-built desk made from reclaimed wood and metal serves as the centerpiece, surrounded by shelves filled with vintage books and curiosities. The lighting fixtures, made from old gas lamps and Edison bulbs, cast a warm, inviting glow that makes the space perfect for both work and relaxation.
The Rosenbaums’ dedication to their steampunk vision extends beyond the interior of their home. The exterior features wrought iron railings, gas lanterns, and a garden filled with Victorian-era plants and flowers. Even the mailbox has been given a steampunk makeover, complete with gears and brass accents.
Bruce and Melanie’s steampunk house is not just a home; it’s a testament to their creativity and passion for blending the old with the new. Their unique approach to home design has garnered attention from steampunk enthusiasts and design aficionados alike, making their house a must-see destination for anyone interested in this fascinating subculture.
