RIM hasn’t exactly had the best year, but according to RIM’s CEO Thorsten Heins that may be about to change as he has said that RIM has a ‘clear shot’ at becoming the number three smartphone platform.
Google’s Android and Apple’s iOS are the top two smartphone platforms, and for RIM to become number three then they would have to overtake Symbian, this is something they could possibly achieve with the launch of their new BlackBerry 10 platform which will launch with new devices early next year.
“We have a clear shot at being the No. 3 platform in the market,” said Heins, who took the reigns at RIM nine months ago. “Carriers want other platforms. And we’re not just another open platform running on another system. We’re BlackBerry.”
Thorsten Heins said that developers are eager to build apps for its BlackBerry 10 platform and for the 80 million users of its BlackBerry devices, he also said that the development pf BlackBerry 10 is on track, so we should see the first devices launching early next year.
It will be interesting to see what RIM’s BlackBerry 10 platform is like, and whether they are able to make the platform popular, and whether consumers will buy their BlackBerry 10 devices.
