LG Electronics has announced this week that they will be demonstrating their next generation flexible OLED screen technology at SID Display Week 2013 which is held in Vancouver, Canada from May 19th to 24th.
At SID, LG will be demonstrating their new 5-inch flexible OLED screen which has been designed to be both flexible and durable. The show will be the first time the flexible OLED screen technology has been shown to the public. This innovative technology represents a significant leap forward in display technology, offering potential applications in a variety of fields including smartphones, wearable devices, and even automotive displays. The flexibility of the screen allows for more robust and versatile designs, potentially leading to devices that can be bent, folded, or rolled without compromising display quality.
Advancements in OLED Technology
OLED, or Organic Light Emitting Diode, technology has been a game-changer in the display industry due to its superior color accuracy, faster response times, and lower power consumption compared to traditional LCD screens. The introduction of flexible OLED screens takes these advantages a step further by adding durability and versatility. Unlike traditional screens, flexible OLEDs are made using a plastic substrate rather than glass, making them lighter and less prone to shattering. This opens up new possibilities for product design and user interaction.
LG Display will also introduce a 5-inch and 7-inch HD LCD panels which have been created based on Oxide TFT technology. This technology is seen as the future of display manufacturing, offering high investment efficiency in producing thin, high transparency, and low power consumption displays. Oxide TFT technology uses a different semiconductor material than traditional amorphous silicon, resulting in better electron mobility and thus higher performance displays. LG explains:
“LG Display, which utilized this technology in its large-sized OLED displays for the first time in the world, will expand its expertise to LCD panel development thereby leading the market.
The 5-inch HD panel will feature a 1.0mm bezel allowing production of borderless smartphones that are lightweight and emit significantly less heat. The 7-inch HD LCD panel is equipped with touch function-embedded technology enabling superior touch functionality in thin and lightweight mobile products.”
Future Implications and Applications
The implications of these advancements are vast. For instance, the 5-inch HD panel with its minimal bezel can lead to the creation of truly borderless smartphones, enhancing the visual experience and making devices more ergonomic. The 7-inch HD LCD panel with embedded touch functionality can revolutionize tablets and other mobile devices, making them more responsive and user-friendly.
Moreover, the low power consumption of these new displays is particularly important in the context of mobile devices, where battery life is a critical factor. By reducing the energy required to power the display, these new technologies can help extend the battery life of smartphones, tablets, and other portable devices, making them more convenient for users.
