The HTC Evo 4G hasn’t gone on sale yet, but it was given out to people who attended the Google I/O conference. A couple of them have already managed to root the handset, and you can check it out in the video below.
The HTC EVO 4G features a 4.3 inch TFT display with a resolution of 480 x 800 pixels. Processing comes in the form of a Qualcomm 1GHz Snapdragon processor, and it also features 1GB of built-in memory and 512MB of RAM.
The HTC EVO 4G has a massive eight-megapixel camera with a built-in flash that can record HD video in 720p. There is also a front-facing 1.3-megapixel camera, which means video conferencing will be available on the EVO 4G.
Rooting the HTC EVO 4G
Rooting a smartphone allows users to gain privileged control (known as root access) within Android’s subsystem. This process enables the installation of custom firmware, removal of pre-installed bloatware, and the ability to run specialized apps that require administrator-level permissions. The HTC EVO 4G, with its robust hardware, becomes even more versatile when rooted.
I ended up with a Sprint HTC EVO 4G after Google I/O. It’s a pretty fantastic phone, even though it’s something of a kitchen sink. By a happy coincidence, I ended up reconnecting with some of my buddies from the old mobile hacking days who were looking to root it. With a few hours effort and a three-person team (credit to ozzeh and Joshua Wise!), we managed to get the standard su tool installed.
Features and Performance
The HTC EVO 4G is not just about its impressive display and camera capabilities. It also includes a range of connectivity options such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and 4G support, making it one of the first smartphones to offer such high-speed mobile internet. The device also comes with a kickstand, which is perfect for watching videos hands-free.
The 1GHz Snapdragon processor ensures smooth performance for most tasks, from browsing the web to playing games. The 1GB of built-in memory and 512MB of RAM might seem modest by today’s standards, but at the time of its release, it was more than sufficient for running multiple apps simultaneously without significant lag.
The HTC EVO 4G also includes an HDMI port, allowing users to connect the phone to a TV or monitor to view content on a larger screen. This feature is particularly useful for presentations or watching movies.
