A new gardening sensor has been created called Grüt, to help children understand the importance of food, as well as allowing them to grow and monitor their crops’ health using a companion smartphone application.
The Grüt sensor provides information on the plant’s environment and monitors how much light, water, as well as providing tips and tasks necessary to care for the growth of the crop. This innovative tool is designed to make gardening both educational and fun for children, encouraging them to take an active interest in the natural world and the food they consume.
How Grüt Works
The Grüt kit includes a set of sensors and an app. The sensors measure the condition (light, temperature, and soil moisture) of the plant. This information is sent to an app that provides feedback to the kids, in the form of a virtual buddy. The virtual buddy interacts with the children, offering advice and encouragement, making the learning process engaging and interactive.
For example, if the soil moisture is low, the app might prompt the child to water the plant, explaining why water is essential for the plant’s growth. Similarly, if the plant is not getting enough light, the app might suggest moving the plant to a sunnier spot. This hands-on approach helps children understand the needs of plants and the basics of gardening.
Educational Benefits of Grüt
Grüt is more than just a gardening tool; it is an educational resource that teaches children about responsibility, science, and the environment. By caring for their plants, children learn about the life cycle of plants, the importance of natural resources, and the impact of environmental conditions on living organisms.
Moreover, Grüt can be used as a teaching aid in schools, helping educators to introduce concepts of biology and ecology in a practical and engaging way. For instance, teachers can use Grüt to demonstrate how different environmental factors affect plant growth, or to discuss the importance of sustainable farming practices.
Watch the video below to learn more from the team of developers based in Amsterdam who have created Grüt and have now taken to Kickstarter to raise the funds necessary to take their design into manufacture.
“Grüt is a kit that helps children grow their own crops. The kit includes a set of sensors and an app. The sensors measure the condition (light, temperature, and soil moisture) of the plant. This information is sent to an app that provides feedback to the kids, in the form of a virtual buddy.”
Visit the Kickstarter website to make a pledge to be one of the first to own a Grüt gardening sensor, by making a pledge from just €22. By supporting this project, backers not only get a chance to own this innovative gardening tool but also contribute to a project that aims to educate and inspire the next generation of gardeners and environmental stewards.
In conclusion, Grüt is a fantastic tool that combines technology and education to foster a love for gardening and an understanding of the environment in children. Its interactive approach makes learning about plant care fun and engaging, while its practical applications provide valuable lessons in responsibility and sustainability.
