I live in Texas and around here, we run summer performance tires year round because winter in Texas means very little chance of snow with 35F temps one day, and 70F temps the next. We know nothing about snow driving around here as evidenced by the complete decay of society the second snow is forecast and by snow in Texas, we mean sleet and ice. If you live in northern climates, you may need snow tires rather than the performance rubber on the Focus RS.
The good news is that Ford has now announced a winter tire package for the Focus RS that will keep you out of the ditch in places where snow is common. Ford says this is the first car in North America to be offered with a factory winter tire option. The package includes Michelin Pilot Alpin PA4 tires, 18-inch silver wheels, tire pressure sensors, center caps, and complete mount and balance.
The wheels have a sparkle silver finish to hide salt and spray better than the standard wheel color. The wheels and tires are also narrower for better traction in the snow; the wheels also support chain fitments if you really need it. The option is available for $1995. It’s unclear if the option allows you to keep the standard wheels and tires as well.
