The fantastically addictive game for the iPad, World of Goo, has announced that in its first month of release it sold over 125,000 copies. In comparison, World of Goo’s best 31-day period on WiiWare was 68,000 copies, and on Steam, it was 97,000 copies.
So far, the iPad version is by far the fastest-selling version of the game, both in terms of the number of units sold and in revenue generated. This remarkable success on the iPad might prompt the developers to reconsider launching the game on the iPhone, especially with the more powerful iPhone 5 around the corner.
The Success of World of Goo on iPad
2D Boy explains:
What makes this even more amazing is that this is a two-year-old game released on a platform that is less than a year old. The iPad doesn’t have the benefit of an install base built up over several years.
In the short term, we still think that if an independent developer can get their game on a console it’s a safer bet than playing the App Store lottery, but one might wonder whether, in the long run, it even matters who wins the PSN / WiiWare / XBLA race.
The iPad’s success can be attributed to several factors. Firstly, the intuitive touch interface of the iPad makes it an ideal platform for a game like World of Goo, which relies heavily on tactile interaction. The larger screen size compared to smartphones also enhances the gaming experience, making it more immersive and engaging for players.
Moreover, the iPad’s portability allows users to play the game anywhere, whether they are commuting, relaxing at home, or on vacation. This convenience has likely contributed to the high sales figures, as players can easily fit gaming into their daily routines.
Future Prospects and Potential Expansion
Given the impressive performance of World of Goo on the iPad, it is worth considering the potential for expanding the game’s availability to other platforms. The iPhone, with its ever-increasing processing power and growing user base, presents a promising opportunity. The upcoming iPhone 5, rumored to have significant hardware improvements, could handle the game’s graphics and physics engine with ease, providing a smooth and enjoyable experience for players.
Additionally, the success on the iPad might encourage 2D Boy to explore other mobile platforms, such as Android tablets and smartphones. Expanding to these platforms could open up new revenue streams and introduce the game to a broader audience.
