UK mobile carrier Vodafone has announced that their WiFi Calling is headed to Samsung’s Galaxy S6 smartphones.
The Vodafone WiFi Calling feature will be available in the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge, the service will be made available ‘this autumn’.
What is WiFi Calling?
WiFi Calling is a feature that allows users to make and receive calls over a WiFi network instead of relying solely on a cellular connection. This can be particularly useful in areas where mobile signal strength is weak or non-existent. For instance, if you are in a building with thick walls, a basement, or even on the London Underground, WiFi Calling ensures that you remain connected as long as you have access to a WiFi network. This feature is especially beneficial for those who live in rural areas or places where mobile coverage is spotty.
Vodafone’s nationwide Wi-Fi Calling enables customers to make and take calls in many more places – whether in a home with thick walls, in a basement or on the London Underground. If connected to Wi-Fi, customers can talk on their phone even if there is no mobile signal.
The introduction of Wi-Fi Calling follows the rollout of Vodafone’s nationwide provision of HD (High Definition) Voice technology, the roll-out of 4G+ (Carrier Aggregation) and the Vodafone Rural Open Sure Signal programme aimed at giving 100 remote communities mobile coverage for the first time.
Additional Benefits and Features
The introduction of WiFi Calling is part of Vodafone’s broader strategy to enhance its network services. Alongside WiFi Calling, Vodafone has also rolled out HD Voice technology, which provides clearer and crisper voice quality during calls. This is achieved by using a wider frequency range, allowing for more natural-sounding conversations. HD Voice is particularly useful in noisy environments, making it easier to hear and be heard.
Moreover, Vodafone has implemented 4G+ (Carrier Aggregation) technology, which combines multiple frequency bands to provide faster data speeds and improved network capacity. This means that users can enjoy quicker downloads, smoother streaming, and a more reliable internet connection, even during peak usage times.
Another significant initiative by Vodafone is the Rural Open Sure Signal programme. This programme aims to bring mobile coverage to 100 remote communities that previously had little to no mobile signal. By installing small, low-power base stations, Vodafone can extend its network reach to these underserved areas, ensuring that more people have access to reliable mobile services.
