We have featured many weird and wonderful concepts and devices here on Geeky Gadgets over the years, but this ultraviolet lamp designed to keep your dishwasher clean is definitely one of the more unique concepts.
The dishwasher lamp has been created to clean your dishwasher and keep it safe from bacteria, germs, and odours.
Simply place the dishwasher lamp on a dish rack between two dishwasher loads, and a sensor will then activate the disinfecting UV light once the door of the dishwasher has been closed. The marketing material for the dishwasher lamp explains:
“Studies have proven that 62% of tested home dishwashers harbour mould. These and other micro-organisms which are harmful to your health get into the machine via the used dishes.
If the dishes aren’t washed immediately after you put them in because the machine isn’t completely full yet, then these harmful microbes can multiply. Now there is an effective weapon to fight this problem.
This UV-C lamp reduces germs by up to 99.9% and ensures that the inside of the dishwasher is permanently hygienic. And unpleasant odours won’t develop in the first place.”
How UV-C Technology Works
Ultraviolet (UV) light is a form of electromagnetic radiation. UV-C light, in particular, has germicidal properties, meaning it can kill or inactivate microorganisms by disrupting their DNA and RNA. This makes it an effective tool for sterilization and disinfection. UV-C technology has been used in various applications, including water purification, air sanitization, and surface disinfection in medical settings. The introduction of UV-C light into household appliances like dishwashers is a novel approach to maintaining hygiene.
The UV-C lamp in the dishwasher works by emitting light at a wavelength of 254 nanometers, which is optimal for germicidal activity. When the dishwasher door is closed, the sensor activates the lamp, allowing it to disinfect the interior surfaces and any residual water. This process helps to eliminate bacteria, viruses, and mould spores that may be present, ensuring that your dishwasher remains clean and safe for use.
Benefits and Considerations
The primary benefit of using a UV-C lamp in your dishwasher is the significant reduction in harmful microorganisms. This can be particularly beneficial for households with individuals who have weakened immune systems, allergies, or sensitivities to mould and bacteria. By keeping the dishwasher clean, you also reduce the risk of cross-contamination to your dishes and utensils, which can help prevent foodborne illnesses.
Another advantage is the prevention of unpleasant odours. Dishwashers that are not cleaned regularly can develop a musty or sour smell due to the accumulation of food particles and bacteria. The UV-C lamp helps to neutralize these odours, keeping your dishwasher smelling fresh.
However, there are some considerations to keep in mind. While UV-C light is effective at killing germs, it does not remove physical debris. Therefore, it is still important to regularly clean the filter and interior surfaces of your dishwasher manually. Additionally, UV-C light can be harmful to human skin and eyes, so it is crucial that the lamp is only activated when the dishwasher door is closed to prevent accidental exposure.
The Disinfecting UV-C Dishwasher Light is now available to purchase for $20 from the website.
