Sony has been rolling out the Android 4.4 KitKat update for its handsets. Earlier this month, the latest Android 4.4 KitKat update started rolling out for the Xperia E1.
Now, reports suggest that the mid-range Xperia M2 is also getting the chocolaty Android 4.4 KitKat update as we speak.
Current Rollout Status
According to the report, the update roll out is not widespread, and is apparently rolling out for the carrier variant of the device in several countries, including France, Ireland, Israel, Russia, Singapore, and Thailand — it’s currently seeding to the LTE variant with the model number D2303. This selective rollout strategy is often employed by manufacturers to ensure that any potential issues can be identified and resolved before a broader release.
New Features and Improvements
Android 4.4 KitKat brings a handful of new features and improvements on board, including several performance improvements, restyled navigation bar and task bar, cloud print support, improved SMS capabilities with the ability to select Hangouts as the default messaging app, and much more. These enhancements are designed to provide a smoother and more intuitive user experience.
One of the most notable features of Android 4.4 KitKat is the introduction of immersive mode, which allows apps to use the full screen by hiding the system UI. This is particularly beneficial for gaming and media consumption, providing a more engaging experience. Additionally, the update includes a new phone dialer that can search across contacts and nearby places, making it easier to find the information you need.
The update also brings enhanced security features, such as SELinux (Security-Enhanced Linux) which helps protect against vulnerabilities and malware. Furthermore, the memory management has been optimized to improve multitasking and overall device performance, which is especially important for mid-range devices like the Xperia M2.
There’s no word about the roll out for other variants of the device, nor its dual-SIM version. We’ll update you as soon as the global roll out commences. In the meantime, let us know if you’ve received the update.
