Sony Ericsson Xperia Play is already available in the US with Verizon Wireless, and now it looks like the Xperia Play is also headed to AT&T, although as yet there is no exact date on when the Xperia Play will be available with AT&T.
AT&T recently showed off the Xperia Play at their holiday preview event in NYC. Although they didn’t give an exact launch date, we would suspect the Xperia Play would be available from AT&T before the holiday shopping season.
The Sony Ericsson Xperia Play features a 4 inch multi-touch display with a resolution of 480 x 854 pixels. Processing is provided by a 1GHz Qualcomm processor, and there is also 512MB of RAM and 512MB of ROM.
The Xperia Play also comes with a 5 megapixel camera with an LED flash and autofocus, and there is also a microSD card slot, which comes with an 8GB card out of the box.
Gaming Capabilities and Unique Features
One of the standout features of the Xperia Play is its dedicated gaming controls, which include a slide-out gamepad with a D-pad, two touch-sensitive analog pads, and the four iconic PlayStation buttons (circle, cross, square, and triangle). This makes it the first PlayStation Certified smartphone, allowing users to play PlayStation Suite games that are optimized for the device. The Xperia Play comes preloaded with several games, including popular titles like “Crash Bandicoot” and “FIFA 10.”
In addition to its gaming prowess, the Xperia Play runs on Android, giving users access to a wide range of apps and services available on the Google Play Store. The device also supports Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS, making it a versatile smartphone for everyday use.
Design and Build Quality
The Xperia Play is designed with gamers in mind, featuring a robust build quality that can withstand the rigors of intense gaming sessions. The slide-out gamepad is sturdy and provides a tactile feel that enhances the gaming experience. The device measures 119 x 62 x 16 mm and weighs 175 grams, making it slightly bulkier than other smartphones, but this is a trade-off for the added gaming functionality.
AT&T will offer two different versions of the Xperia Play, one in black and one in “Stealth Blue.” The Stealth Blue variant adds a touch of uniqueness and style, catering to users who want a device that stands out. There are no details on pricing as yet, but it is expected to be competitive given the features and capabilities of the device.
The Xperia Play also includes a 1500mAh battery, which provides up to 8 hours of talk time and up to 425 hours of standby time. For gaming, the battery life is sufficient for several hours of continuous play, although heavy users may need to recharge more frequently.
In summary, the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play is a unique device that combines the functionality of a smartphone with the gaming capabilities of a PlayStation console. Its dedicated gamepad, PlayStation Certified status, and robust build quality make it an attractive option for gamers. With its impending release on AT&T, more users will have the opportunity to experience this innovative device.
