Roku has announced that it is bringing its enhanced voice search feature to the UK. The new voice search is coming to Roku streaming players through the mobile app and to the Roku Streaming Stick+ via its remote control.
The company will release this new feature along with Roku OS 8.1 which will start to roll out from the 1st of May 2018.
Enhanced Voice Search Capabilities
Enhanced Voice Search allows for more natural language understanding and can search for movies, shows, actors, and directors, or even launch streaming channels, in a more conversational tone. For example, a user can say things like, “show me comedies”, “find The Grand Tour” or “launch hayu.” This feature is designed to make the user experience more intuitive and efficient, reducing the time spent navigating through menus and typing out search queries.
The enhanced voice search is not just limited to finding specific titles or genres. It can also handle more complex queries such as “show me movies with Tom Hanks” or “find romantic comedies from the 90s.” This level of sophistication in voice recognition technology is aimed at making the streaming experience as seamless as possible.
Integration with Roku OS 8.1
The rollout of Roku OS 8.1 is a significant update that brings several new features and improvements to the platform. In addition to enhanced voice search, the update includes performance enhancements, bug fixes, and other user interface improvements. This ensures that users not only get a more powerful search tool but also a smoother and more reliable streaming experience overall.
Roku OS 8.1 also introduces new functionalities such as single sign-on for TV Everywhere channels, making it easier for users to access their favorite content without repeatedly entering login credentials. This update is part of Roku’s ongoing commitment to improving user experience and staying competitive in the rapidly evolving streaming market.
“We want to get our customers to the show they want to watch quickly,” said Lloyd Klarke, Director of Product Management at Roku. “Enhanced voice search makes it even easier for our users to find new movies and TV shows to watch.”
Expanding the Roku Ecosystem
Roku’s decision to bring enhanced voice search to the UK is part of a broader strategy to expand its ecosystem and make its devices more appealing to a global audience. By offering advanced features like voice search, Roku aims to differentiate itself from competitors such as Amazon Fire TV and Google Chromecast, which also offer voice search capabilities but may not have the same level of integration and ease of use.
The enhanced voice search feature is expected to be particularly popular among users who are already accustomed to using voice assistants like Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and Apple’s Siri. By integrating similar functionality into its streaming devices, Roku is tapping into a growing market of consumers who prefer voice commands over traditional remote controls.
