On the same day that Canon has unveiled its new cinema camera, the C300, Red has also launched their new Scarlet, which now records in full 4k resolution. Providing an impressive 4096 × 2160 pixels resolution for video, and an even more remarkable 5120 × 2700 for still images, the Scarlet also boasts a maximum frame rate of 120 fps. This makes it a formidable competitor in the high-end camera market.
Technical Specifications and Capabilities
The new Red Scarlet records in Redcode RAW format and is capable of shooting at 1K at 120fps, which surpasses the new Canon C300 that can only output to 1080p despite having a 4k sensor. This capability makes the Scarlet particularly appealing for filmmakers who require high frame rates for slow-motion shots or other specialized filming techniques.
The Red Scarlet also comes with Canon EF and PL mounts available, but the PL version will cost a little more than the EF. The camera also features a 5K burst mode, which can snap up to 12 fps, with 4K reaching up to 30 fps. This versatility allows filmmakers to capture high-resolution stills and video with a single device, making it a highly efficient tool for various types of productions.
Customization and Accessories
Red’s other option accessories and modules also allow you to configure your camera to adapt and fit every shoot. This modularity is one of Red’s standout features, enabling users to customize their setup with various add-ons such as different lens mounts, monitors, and storage solutions. For instance, the camera can be outfitted with additional SSDs for extended recording times or with specialized grips and rigs for different shooting environments.
Price for the Scarlet X brain plus an SSD is $9,750 (£6,000 or €7,000). For a kit with a battery, controller, and LCD, the cost will be around $14,000 (£8,700 or €10,000) depending on options. Shipping will commence on November 17th, although these will require buying a version with a titanium PL mount for lenses.
The Scarlet’s pricing positions it as a more accessible option for independent filmmakers and small production companies who need high-quality equipment without the exorbitant costs typically associated with professional cinema cameras. This democratization of high-end filming technology could lead to a surge in high-quality independent films and projects.
