Knitting enthusiast and Australian software engineer has created a knitting machine using the Raspberry Pi mini PC combined with a little Arduino technology and code written in PHP and Python. Enabling the system to interface with a Brother KM950i knitting machine to create an awesome stargazing tapestry.
The Stargazing Knitted Tapestry, measures 4.6 metres wide and 2.8 metres high and was displayed at the recent geek festival EMF Camp. Check out the video via the Media CCC.de website where Sarah offers a video presentation of the system and Raspberry Pi knitting machine project.
“I hacked a domestic knitting machine from the 1980s and turned it into a network printer. I’ll show you how I did it using a Raspberry Pi, an Arduino compatible board, Python and a PHP/MySQL web interface. I share my source code. I’ll also take you through a brief showcase of what I’ve done with my printer since automating it, including Stargazing: a knitted tapestry on show for the first time here at EMF!”
