Web gaming runs on frequent, short visits. In Poki’s 2026 State of Web Gaming Report, which surveyed 2,000 web gamers in the US and UK who play at least weekly, 37% said they play several times a day and 86% play at least a few times a week. A typical session lasts 11 to 20 minutes, and players move through two or three titles per sitting.
Most Popular Car Games Account for 10% of US Plays
To see where those sessions go in one category, the Poki game intelligence report looks at 154 car games, or 7.6% of the Poki catalog, using US gameplay data from June 2025 to June 2026. Car games generate 10% of all plays in that period. The average play lasts 332 seconds, 10% below the platform average. At about five and a half minutes, two or three plays fit inside a typical 11- to 20-minute session.
The two datasets describe different groups. The survey covers respondents in the US and UK, while the car game report covers Poki’s US player base, so this article uses the survey for how people play and the report for what they pick, and does not merge the figures.
Platform Games Generate 30% of Plays From 7% of Titles
With 154 titles competing for those few slots, the first split is by game type. The report compares each type’s share of titles with its share of plays.
- Simulation: 41% of titles, 33% of plays
- Racing: 33% of titles, 18% of plays
- Action: 11% of titles, 13% of plays
- Platform: 7% of titles, 30% of plays
- Other: 8% of titles, 7% of plays
Simulation and racing together make up 74% of titles but 51% of plays, so the number of games in a type does not decide how often players pick it. The report says the platform group’s weight is driven largely by Drive Mad, while Crazy Cars leads simulation and MR RACER – Car Racing leads racing.
Drive Mad Leads on Plays, Smash Karts on Playtime
Plays show which game gets picked first, and one title dominates. Drive Mad accounts for 23.2% of US car game plays, about four times the share of the next-largest title, Blacktop Police Chase at 5.8%. MR RACER – Car Racing and Smash Karts follow at 3.3% each, then Crazy Cars at 2.8%. Even so, 61.6% of plays come from games outside the top five.
Playtime shows which game keeps players once they have picked it, and the leader changes. Smash Karts averages 573 seconds per play, 72.6% above the category average, ahead of Build League at 439 seconds, Traffic Escape! at 423 seconds, Rocket Soccer Derby at 397 seconds and Crazy Cars at 395 seconds. At about nine and a half minutes, one average Smash Karts play would take close to half of the longest typical session in the survey. Three of those five games include multiplayer or competitive elements, which the report reads as a sign that social play can drive retention.
Player Approval Adds a Third Measure
Being picked and being kept still leave out whether players liked the game, and popularity and approval do not line up either. Drive Mad has the most likes of any car game, 103,198, yet its 4.3 out of 5 approval rating sits below City Car Driving: Stunt Master (31,404 likes) and Drift Boss (11,884 likes), both at 4.6. Blacktop Police Chase has an approval rating of 4.4.
To rank overall performance, the report combines the three signals in the Poki Score, which uses total plays and playtime with retention and is indexed to 10. Drive Mad scores 10.0, Smash Karts 9.6, Blacktop Police Chase 9.5, Traffic Escape! 9.2 and Crazy Cars 9.1.
Three Games, Three Different Routes to the Top
The report profiles one leader for each way of winning a slot.
Drive Mad, developed by Fancade and live since July 2022, has 18.1 million total plays. The report credits its identity, with a title, look and game design that are unmistakably Fancade. Fancade describes the appeal as “simple, funny and a bit chaotic”.
Smash Karts, from Tall Team and live since April 2020, has 2.6 million total plays. The report points to six years of continuous updates and a Discord community of more than 250,000 people.
Blacktop Police Chase, from Steelpan Interactive and live since February 2025, has 4.5 million total plays. The report attributes its rise to execution quality, citing satisfying physics and clear objectives.
What the Metrics Suggest About Player Choice
Set against the survey’s picture of short sessions with two or three titles, the three measures describe three ways a game earns a slot: being picked first, holding attention once picked, and being rated well. No single metric names one winner. Plays favor a platform game with unpredictable physics and a distinct identity, time spent favors a multiplayer kart game with an active community, and a newer police chase title reached 4.5 million plays in under two years. Taken together, the numbers suggest players pick car games for several reasons at once, and the car game sample covers Poki’s US players only, so it describes that audience rather than the games market as a whole.
