Yesterday, Microsoft announced a number of new features which it has now included within its Office Web Apps service. The new features have been created and added using customer feedback, explains Microsoft in its blog post. The new features include Pen input for OneNote, Excel Merge-Autofit support, direct printing from Excel, and right-click menus in Excel, to name just a few.
Enhanced OneNote Capabilities
As from today, the OneNote Web App now displays ink, which is a significant enhancement for users who prefer to use pen-input devices on Tablet PCs. This feature allows users to draw and write notes directly within OneNote, making it more versatile for various types of note-taking and brainstorming sessions. Additionally, users who enjoy using the Draw tools in OneNote can now add ink and highlighting with the mouse or trackpad when working on a PC. This makes the OneNote Web App more accessible and functional for a broader range of users, whether they are using a stylus, mouse, or trackpad.
Excel Web App Improvements
The Excel Web App has also seen several important updates. Enhanced cell formatting is now available, allowing users to merge cells and automatically fit cell sizes based on the content within the cells. This feature is particularly useful for creating well-organized and visually appealing spreadsheets. For example, if you are working on a financial report, you can now merge cells to create headers that span multiple columns, making your data easier to read and understand.
Another significant addition is the support for direct printing from within the Excel Web App. This means that users can now print their documents directly from Excel, even when accessing them from their Skydrive. This feature streamlines the workflow, as users no longer need to download the document to their local machine before printing. It is especially beneficial for those who frequently work on shared documents and need to print them on the go.
Moreover, the introduction of right-click menus in Excel enhances the user experience by providing quick access to commonly used functions. For instance, users can now right-click on a cell to quickly cut, copy, paste, or format the cell, making it easier to manage and manipulate data without having to navigate through multiple menus.
Microsoft explains:
“We’ve heard from our OneNote customers who like to use pen-input devices on Tablet PCs to draw and write notes, and we’ve heard from others who enjoy using the Draw tools in OneNote to add ink and highlighting with the mouse or trackpad when working on PC”
These updates are part of Microsoft’s ongoing effort to improve its Office Web Apps service based on user feedback. By listening to its customers, Microsoft aims to make its web-based office suite more intuitive and efficient for a wide range of tasks, from note-taking and data analysis to document printing and formatting.
More information on all the new features added to the Microsoft Office Web App Service can be found on the official Office Web App service website.
