When Apple releases a new iPhone, we often see a number of torture test videos, and now the guys from Square Trade have decided to see how durable the new Apple iPhone SE is.
In the video below, we can see Apple’s 4-inch iPhone being tested in water, subjected to a simulated drop test, and also tested under pressure for bending.
Water Resistance Test
The iPhone SE was submerged in water to test its resistance to liquid damage. While Apple does not officially rate the iPhone SE for water resistance, it managed to survive being submerged for a short period. However, prolonged exposure to water could still cause significant damage, so it’s advisable to avoid getting the device wet.
Drop Test and Durability
The drop test simulated the phone being dropped from various heights to see how well it could withstand impacts. The iPhone SE showed a reasonable level of durability, with its smaller size and lighter weight potentially contributing to its ability to absorb shocks better than larger models. However, like most smartphones, it is still susceptible to screen cracks and other damage if dropped from significant heights.
The iPhone SE managed to bend when it was under 160 pounds of pressure. This is slightly less than the iPhone 6S, which took 170 pounds of pressure to bend. This indicates that while the iPhone SE is fairly robust, it is not as resistant to bending as some of its larger counterparts.
Square Trade scored the iPhone SE with a breakability score of 5.5. This is less than the iPhone 6S Plus and more than the iPhone 6S, which means that the iPhone 6S is the least prone to damage out of the three devices. The breakability score takes into account various factors such as drop performance, water resistance, and bendability.
Additional Considerations
While these tests provide a good indication of the iPhone SE’s durability, it’s important to remember that real-world usage can vary. For instance, using a protective case and screen protector can significantly enhance the phone’s durability. Additionally, how a phone is handled daily—such as avoiding drops and keeping it away from water—plays a crucial role in its longevity.
The iPhone SE offers a good balance of durability and performance, especially considering its price point. While it may not be as robust as some of the more expensive models like the iPhone 6S, it still holds up well under various stress tests. For users looking for a compact, affordable iPhone, the SE is a solid choice.
