How Google Street View Hyperlapse Works
Teehan+Lax explain a little more about how their Google Street View Hyperlapse technology works:
“Hyper-lapse photography – a technique combining time-lapse and sweeping camera movements typically focused on a point-of-interest – has been a growing trend on video sites. It’s not hard to find stunning examples on Vimeo.
Creating them requires precision and many hours stitching together photos taken from carefully mapped locations. We aimed at making the process simpler by using Google Street View as an aid, but quickly discovered that it could be used as the source material. It worked so well, we decided to design a very usable UI around our engine and release Google Street View Hyperlapse.”
The technology leverages the vast repository of images available through Google Street View, allowing users to create dynamic, moving sequences that simulate a journey through various landscapes and cityscapes. This is achieved by selecting a start and end point on a map, and the software then stitches together the images from Google Street View to create a seamless video. This process, which would traditionally take hours of manual labor, is now automated, making it accessible to anyone with an internet connection.
Applications and Potential Uses
Google Street View Hyperlapse has a wide range of potential applications. For instance, it can be used in the real estate industry to provide virtual tours of neighborhoods, giving potential buyers a sense of the area without having to visit in person. Travel enthusiasts can use it to explore new destinations and plan their trips more effectively. Educators can incorporate it into geography lessons, allowing students to virtually visit different parts of the world.
Moreover, filmmakers and content creators can use this tool to add dynamic visuals to their projects without the need for expensive equipment or extensive travel. The ability to create custom routes means that the possibilities are virtually endless, limited only by the user’s imagination.
