Gigabyte has unveiled a new set of speakers that it says are the first in the world to use the USB 3.0 port exclusively. Speakers don’t need faster connectivity, so you may be wondering why Gigabyte would build a set of speakers that specifically require the USB 3.0 port to operate. The answer to that question is one of power.
The USB 3.0 port delivers 900mA of power, which is twice the power that a USB 2.0 port can deliver. What that means is the speakers using USB 3.0 port can have a bigger amplifier allowing for better sound. The speakers haven’t launched officially yet so some of the specifications are unknown.
We do know is that they have controls for music and volume on top of one of the speaker units. The speakers will have an integrated DAC as well. We don’t know how much the speakers will cost or when they will be available at this time.
