We have seen quite a few different iPhone 3G and 3GS mods here at Geeky Gadgets. Most of them are new housing for your iPhone covered in diamonds and gold, which are going to set you back a fair amount of cash. These luxurious modifications often cater to those looking to make a statement with their devices, but they can be prohibitively expensive for the average consumer.
One iPhone owner, Martin Schrotz, decided he didn’t like the plastic casing on the back of his iPhone 3GS, so he set out to re-design it. Martin spent over three months coming up with the final version. Initially, he tried using aluminum, but that didn’t work out so well. Aluminum, while lightweight and relatively strong, did not provide the durability and premium feel Martin was aiming for. So, he came up with this awesome titanium design.
The Design Process
Martin measured the iPhone casing digitally and then drew the cover in CAD (Computer-Aided Design). This meticulous process ensured that every curve and port on the iPhone was accurately represented in the new design. The final case is constructed from titanium alloy, a material known for its exceptional strength-to-weight ratio and resistance to corrosion. Titanium is often used in aerospace and medical applications, which speaks to its durability and premium quality.
The use of titanium not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the iPhone but also significantly improves its durability. Unlike plastic, which can crack or degrade over time, titanium offers a robust and long-lasting alternative. This is by far the coolest iPhone mod we have seen, combining both form and function in a way that few other modifications do.
Why Titanium?
The choice of titanium for this custom iPhone case is particularly interesting. Titanium is a metal that is as strong as steel but much lighter, making it an ideal material for a smartphone case. It is also biocompatible, meaning it is non-toxic and not harmful to the human body, which is why it is often used in medical implants. Additionally, titanium has a unique ability to withstand extreme temperatures, making it a reliable choice for protecting electronic devices.
Another advantage of titanium is its resistance to fingerprints and smudges, which is a common issue with plastic and even some metal cases. This means that the iPhone will maintain its sleek appearance with minimal maintenance. The natural metallic finish of titanium also gives the iPhone a sophisticated and modern look that is hard to achieve with other materials.
Personally, I think Martin should start selling these replacement cases for the iPhone 3G and 3GS. I would buy one; it looks so much better than the one that comes with the iPhone. The combination of enhanced durability, improved aesthetics, and the unique properties of titanium make this mod a highly desirable upgrade for any iPhone 3G or 3GS owner.
