After successfully being developed thanks to an impressive Kickstarter campaign, Double Fine Productions has this week announced that their new Broken Age game has this week launched onto Sony’s next-generation PlayStation 4 and handheld games console the PS Vita.
Broken Age is a point-and-click adventure video game, and Tim Schafer’s first return to the genre since 1998’s Grim Fandango and raised over $3.45 million via Kickstarter thanks to over 87,000 backers.
The Story and Gameplay
Broken Age tells the story of two teenagers, Vella Tartine and Shay Volta, who find themselves in similar situations but in radically different worlds. Vella is chosen by her village to be sacrificed to a monster, but she decides to fight back. Shay, on the other hand, is a boy living a solitary life on a spaceship under the care of a motherly computer. The game allows players to switch between the two characters at will, experiencing their parallel stories and uncovering how their fates intertwine.
The gameplay is classic point-and-click, where players interact with the environment, solve puzzles, and engage in dialogue with other characters. The puzzles are designed to be challenging yet logical, requiring players to think creatively to progress. The hand-painted art style and the orchestral score add to the game’s immersive experience, making it a visual and auditory delight.
“Broken Age is a beautiful, hand-animated adventure game brought to you from the creators of Grim Fandango, Costume Quest, and Brutal Legend, with an all-star vocal cast including Elijah Wood, Jack Black, and Jennifer Hale.
Through PS4, Broken Age delivers a very cinematic, animated-movie like experience that can be shared with friends or family from the comfort of your couch. And on PS Vita, through the power of cross buy and cross save, the game becomes much more of a personal story-book-like experience that’s easy to curl up with.”
Features and Reception
One of the standout features of Broken Age is its voice cast. Elijah Wood voices Shay, bringing a sense of innocence and curiosity to the character. Jack Black and Jennifer Hale also lend their talents, adding depth and personality to the game’s diverse cast of characters. The game’s dialogue is witty and engaging, often filled with humor and emotional moments that resonate with players.
The game also supports cross-buy and cross-save features between the PS4 and PS Vita. This means that players who purchase the game on one platform can play it on the other without having to buy it again. The cross-save feature allows players to transfer their progress between the two platforms seamlessly, making it easy to pick up where they left off, whether they’re at home or on the go.
Broken Age has received positive reviews from both critics and players. Its charming art style, compelling story, and nostalgic gameplay have been praised, making it a must-play for fans of the adventure genre. The game’s successful Kickstarter campaign also highlights the power of crowdfunding in bringing creative projects to life, allowing developers to connect directly with their audience and create games that might not have been possible through traditional funding methods.
Broken Age is currently available to purchase at a special launch price offering 30 percent off the retail price and $17.49 for PS Plus subscribers, before it returns to a normal price of $24.99 next week.
