BlackBerry has officially launched their new Android handset, the BlackBerry Priv, in India. The handset will be available from this Saturday, the 30th of January.
The BlackBerry Priv will retail for Rs 62,990, which is about $925 at the current exchange rate. The device comes with Android 5.1 Lollipop.
Specifications and Features
As a reminder, the Priv features a 5.4-inch display with a QHD resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels. This high-resolution screen ensures that users get a crisp and clear viewing experience, making it ideal for multimedia consumption, gaming, and productivity tasks. The handset also comes with a hexa-core Snapdragon 808 processor and 3GB of RAM, which should provide smooth performance for most applications and multitasking needs.
One of the standout features of the BlackBerry Priv is its slide-out QWERTY keyboard. This physical keyboard is a nod to BlackBerry’s legacy and is likely to appeal to users who prefer tactile feedback over touchscreen typing. The keyboard also doubles as a touch-sensitive trackpad, allowing for more precise navigation and control.
Other specifications on the Priv include 32GB of internal storage, which should be sufficient for most users. However, for those who need more space, the device also comes with a microSD card slot for expansion, supporting cards up to 2TB. This makes it easy to store large amounts of data, such as photos, videos, and apps.
Camera and Additional Features
The BlackBerry Priv is equipped with front and rear-facing cameras. On the front of the handset, there is a 2-megapixel camera designed for video calls and selfies. While this may seem modest compared to some other smartphones on the market, it should be adequate for most users’ needs.
On the back, the Priv boasts an 18-megapixel camera. This rear camera is equipped with Schneider-Kreuznach optics, dual-LED flash, and optical image stabilization (OIS), which should help in capturing high-quality photos and videos even in low-light conditions. The camera also supports 4K video recording, making it a versatile tool for both photography enthusiasts and casual users.
In terms of software, the BlackBerry Priv runs on Android 5.1 Lollipop, but it also includes several BlackBerry-specific enhancements. These include the BlackBerry Hub, which consolidates all your messages, emails, and social media updates into one unified inbox, and DTEK by BlackBerry, a security app that monitors and protects your privacy.
The handset also features a robust build quality, with a curved screen that adds to its aesthetic appeal. The device’s battery life is another strong point, with a 3410mAh battery that supports fast charging and is designed to last through a full day of heavy use.
It will be interesting to see if the BlackBerry Priv becomes popular in India. The handset appears to be more popular than some of their previous devices, likely due to its combination of Android’s versatility and BlackBerry’s renowned security features. The Indian market is highly competitive, with numerous brands vying for consumer attention, but the Priv’s unique features could give it an edge.
The BlackBerry Priv offers a compelling mix of high-end specifications, unique features, and robust security measures. Whether it will capture a significant share of the Indian market remains to be seen, but it certainly has the potential to do so.
