Three UK has announced that it will be adding VoLTE (Voice over LTE) to its 4G network in the UK from September.
The company launched its 4G LTE network in the UK last year and they are expanding the network with some low frequency spectrum.
Low frequency spectrum such as this will significantly enhance our coverage footprint, particularly indoors, which is excellent news when it comes to current coverage blackspots.
In addition to this, the low frequency spectrum means customers will be able to make calls over our 4G network. This is known as Voice over LTE (or VoLTE). At the moment our 4G network only runs data services, but come September customers will be able to use our 4G network for calls as well. Meaning they’ll be able to make and receive calls in places they’ve never been able to before. Call quality on 4G will also be of a very high quality.
What is VoLTE?
Voice over LTE, or VoLTE, is a technology that allows voice calls to be made over a 4G LTE network, rather than the traditional 2G or 3G networks. This technology offers several advantages, including improved call quality and faster call setup times. VoLTE also allows for simultaneous use of voice and data services, meaning you can browse the internet or use apps while on a call without any degradation in service.
One of the key benefits of VoLTE is its ability to provide high-definition (HD) voice quality, which is significantly clearer than the voice quality on older networks. This is achieved through a wider frequency range, allowing for more natural-sounding conversations. Additionally, VoLTE can help reduce network congestion by freeing up bandwidth on older networks, which can be used for other services.
Impact on Coverage and Call Quality
The introduction of VoLTE on Three UK’s network is expected to have a significant impact on both coverage and call quality. The use of low frequency spectrum will enhance the network’s ability to penetrate buildings and other obstacles, reducing the number of coverage blackspots. This is particularly important for indoor coverage, where traditional higher frequency signals often struggle to reach.
With VoLTE, customers will be able to make and receive calls in areas where they previously had no signal. This is a major improvement for those who live or work in areas with poor coverage. The enhanced call quality provided by VoLTE will also be a welcome change for many users, offering clearer and more reliable voice communication.
In addition to improved coverage and call quality, VoLTE also offers faster call setup times. Traditional 2G and 3G networks can take several seconds to establish a call connection, but with VoLTE, this process is almost instantaneous. This means less waiting time for calls to connect and a more seamless communication experience.
Another advantage of VoLTE is its ability to support video calls over the 4G network. This opens up new possibilities for communication, allowing users to make high-quality video calls without the need for a separate app or service. This can be particularly useful for business users who need to conduct video conferences on the go.
