We have already seen the original iPhone 4 get taken apart, and now the guys over at iFixit have decided to take their screwdriver to the new Verizon iPhone 4.
What was found inside was that the Verizon iPhone 4 features a different antenna design than the original iPhone 4, something we already knew, and the Verizon iPhone 4 is only compatible with CDMA networks.
Key Differences in Antenna Design
The antenna design of the Verizon iPhone 4 was a significant point of interest. Unlike the original iPhone 4, which faced criticism for its “antennagate” issue where holding the phone in a certain way could drop calls, the Verizon version aimed to rectify these issues. The redesigned antenna was intended to improve signal reception and reduce the likelihood of dropped calls. This was a crucial update, especially for Verizon users who expected reliable service.
Qualcomm “Gobi” MDM6600 Baseband Chip
The guys at iFixit found something quite interesting inside the Verizon iPhone 4: it features Qualcomm’s “Gobi” MDM6600 baseband chip. This chip is capable of supporting both CDMA and GSM networks. While the Verizon iPhone 4 was only configured to work on CDMA networks, the inclusion of this chip suggested that the hardware was technically capable of supporting GSM networks as well. This discovery led to speculation about whether future software updates or models could unlock this potential, making the device more versatile.
The Qualcomm “Gobi” MDM6600 baseband chip was a significant find because it highlighted Apple’s forward-thinking approach to hardware design. By including a chip that could support multiple network types, Apple was potentially paving the way for a more unified global model in the future. This would be particularly beneficial for international travelers who need a phone that can switch between different network standards seamlessly.
