The Guys over at Improv Anywhere decided to re-create a scene from Star Wars on the New York subway, in full costume, and as you will see in the video below it certainly keeps the passengers entertained. Also, make sure you check out the book Princess Leia is reading.
For our latest mission, we staged a reenactment of the first Princess Leia / Darth Vader scene from Star Wars on a New York City subway car. The white walls and sliding doors on the train reminded us of the rebel ship from the movie, and we thought it would be fun to see how people would react to a surprise appearance by the iconic characters. We spread out the actors along the train line, staging it so they would enter the right car at the right time. Enjoy the video first and then go behind-the-scenes with the photos and report below.
The Concept Behind the Reenactment
Improv Anywhere is known for their creative and often humorous public performances, and this Star Wars reenactment is no exception. The idea was to bring a piece of the beloved sci-fi saga to life in an unexpected setting, providing a delightful surprise for unsuspecting subway passengers. The choice of the New York City subway was particularly inspired, as its enclosed space and frequent stops allowed for a controlled yet dynamic environment in which the actors could perform.
The scene chosen for the reenactment is one of the most iconic moments from the original Star Wars film, where Princess Leia confronts Darth Vader. By recreating this scene, Improv Anywhere aimed to evoke nostalgia among older fans while introducing younger audiences to the magic of Star Wars in a unique way.
Behind the Scenes: Planning and Execution
The execution of this mission required meticulous planning and coordination. The actors, dressed in full costume as Princess Leia, Darth Vader, and stormtroopers, were strategically placed along the subway line. Timing was crucial, as each actor had to enter the subway car at precisely the right moment to ensure the scene unfolded seamlessly.
One of the most amusing details of the performance is the book that Princess Leia is seen reading. This small touch adds an extra layer of humor and authenticity to the reenactment, as it contrasts the serious nature of the scene with a mundane, everyday activity.
The reactions of the subway passengers varied from amused to bewildered, with many pulling out their phones to capture the unexpected spectacle. Some passengers even interacted with the actors, adding to the spontaneity and fun of the performance. This interaction is a testament to the power of live, unscripted theater to engage and entertain people in their everyday lives.
Improv Anywhere’s Star Wars subway car reenactment is a perfect example of how public performances can bring joy and surprise to ordinary settings. By choosing a universally recognized and beloved scene, they were able to connect with a wide audience and create a memorable experience for everyone involved.
