Some of our readers will remember the Sony Vaio M series that was leaked last week. Sony has now officially announced their latest Vaio netbook, the Vaio M Series.
The Sony Vaio M Series will feature a 10.1 inch LED display with a resolution of 1024 x 600 pixels, which is quite standard for netbooks of its time, providing a decent balance between portability and usability. The display is designed to offer clear and bright visuals, making it suitable for everyday tasks such as browsing the web, checking emails, and watching videos.
Performance and Hardware
Under the hood, the Vaio M Series is powered by an Intel Atom N450 1.66GHz processor. The Intel Atom N450 was a popular choice for netbooks during its release period due to its energy efficiency and adequate performance for basic computing tasks. This processor ensures that the netbook can handle everyday applications smoothly, although it may struggle with more demanding software.
Storage comes in the form of a 250GB 5400 rpm SATA hard drive, which provides ample space for storing documents, media files, and software. While 250GB might seem modest by today’s standards, it was quite generous for netbooks at the time. Additionally, the device includes 1GB of DDR2 RAM, which is sufficient for running the pre-installed operating system and basic applications. However, users looking to run multiple applications simultaneously might find the RAM limiting.
Graphics are provided by an integrated Intel GMA 3150 chip. While this graphics solution is not designed for gaming or high-end graphics work, it is more than capable of handling standard tasks such as video playback and light photo editing. The inclusion of a built-in web camera makes the Vaio M Series suitable for video conferencing and online communication, which is a valuable feature for both personal and professional use.
Connectivity and Additional Features
Connectivity on the Sony Vaio M Series is robust, featuring 802.11 b/g/n WiFi and Bluetooth 2.1+EDR. This ensures that users can connect to the internet wirelessly and pair with other Bluetooth-enabled devices such as headphones, mice, and smartphones. The netbook also includes a pair of built-in stereo speakers and a mono microphone, which are essential for multimedia consumption and voice communication.
For peripheral connectivity, the Vaio M Series offers three USB 2.0 ports, allowing users to connect external devices such as flash drives, external hard drives, and printers. While USB 2.0 is slower compared to the newer USB 3.0 standard, it was the norm at the time and provides adequate data transfer speeds for most tasks.
The Sony Vaio M Series netbook will be available in the UK shortly for around £299, which is approximately $450. It will come in a choice of black and white, catering to different aesthetic preferences. The pricing positions it competitively within the netbook market, offering a blend of performance, portability, and brand reliability.
As of now, there are no details on when the Vaio M Series will go on sale in the US. However, given Sony’s global reach and the popularity of the Vaio brand, it is likely that an announcement regarding US availability will follow soon.
