Sony has this week added two new lenses to its E-Mount range, with the launch of the 20mm f/2.8 that will start shipping in April for $350, and an 18-200 f/3.5-6.3 power zoom lens that will arrive in stores during March and be priced at $1200.
The new Sony E-Mount 18-200 Powered Telephoto Zoom Lens already exists and was previously only available as a bundle with the VG-30 camcorder, and has been designed for serious videographers with use on Sony’s VG-30, FS-700, and VG-900 video cameras.
Features of the 20mm f/2.8 Pancake Lens
The smaller 20mm f/2.8 pancake lens offers a wide field of view, and creates an exceptionally versatile, portable package ideal for a broad range of everyday shooting opportunities ranging from interiors to landscapes, street photography, casual snapshots and more, says Sony. This lens is particularly appealing to photographers who value portability without compromising on image quality. The ultra-slim design, measuring approximately 20mm from lens front to back, makes it a perfect companion for travel and on-the-go photography.
The 20mm f/2.8 lens features a bright F2.8 aperture, which is beneficial for low-light conditions and achieving a shallow depth of field. This allows photographers to capture stunning images with beautiful background blur, making subjects stand out. The lens also offers a wide angle of view, equivalent to 30mm on a 35mm full-frame sensor, providing a broader perspective that is ideal for capturing expansive scenes and tight spaces.
Advantages of the 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 Power Zoom Lens
The 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 power zoom lens is a versatile telephoto zoom lens that caters to both photographers and videographers. This lens covers a wide focal range, from wide-angle to telephoto, making it suitable for various shooting scenarios, including wildlife, sports, and event photography. The power zoom functionality is particularly advantageous for videographers, allowing smooth and precise zoom control during video recording.
Designed with serious videographers in mind, the 18-200mm lens is compatible with Sony’s VG-30, FS-700, and VG-900 video cameras. It features Optical SteadyShot image stabilization, which helps reduce camera shake and produce sharp, stable footage, even when shooting handheld. This is especially useful for capturing high-quality video in dynamic environments.
The lens construction includes advanced optical elements that minimize aberrations and distortions, ensuring high-resolution images with excellent clarity and contrast. The variable aperture range of f/3.5-6.3 allows for flexibility in different lighting conditions, although it may require higher ISO settings or additional lighting in low-light situations.
In conclusion, Sony’s addition of the 20mm f/2.8 pancake lens and the 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 power zoom lens to its E-Mount range provides photographers and videographers with more options to suit their creative needs. The compact and lightweight design of the 20mm lens makes it an excellent choice for everyday photography, while the versatile focal range and power zoom capabilities of the 18-200mm lens cater to a wide range of shooting scenarios, particularly for video production.
