Some smartphones are just starting to get 48 megapixel cameras and now Samsung has announced a new 64 megapixel camera.
The 64 megapixel ISOCELL Bright GW1 is designed to be used in smartphones and we should see it in devices later this year. This new sensor is expected to revolutionize mobile photography by providing unprecedented detail and clarity in images. The ISOCELL Bright GW1 sensor uses advanced pixel technologies to enhance image quality, even in challenging lighting conditions. This means that users can expect better performance in low-light environments, with reduced noise and improved color accuracy.
Advanced Pixel Technologies
The ISOCELL Bright GW1 sensor incorporates Samsung’s Tetracell technology, which merges four pixels into one to increase light sensitivity. This is particularly useful in low-light scenarios, where capturing enough light is crucial for a good photograph. Additionally, the sensor supports real-time high dynamic range (HDR) of up to 100-decibels, providing richer hues and more detailed shadows and highlights. This is a significant improvement over the typical 60-decibel dynamic range found in most smartphone cameras today.
Moreover, the sensor is equipped with Dual Conversion Gain (DCG) technology, which converts the received light into an electric signal based on the illumination level. This allows the sensor to optimize its full well capacity, resulting in better performance in both bright and dark environments. The GW1 also supports Super PD, a high-performance phase detection auto-focus technology, ensuring that users can capture fast-moving subjects with ease and precision.
48 Megapixel ISOCELL GM2 Camera
The company also announced a new 48 megapixel ISOCELL GM2 camera which should also be in devices later this year. The GM2 sensor is an upgrade over its predecessor, featuring improved pixel isolation and enhanced color fidelity. Like the GW1, the GM2 also utilizes Tetracell technology for better low-light performance and supports DCG for optimized light conversion.
The GM2 sensor is designed to deliver high-quality images with excellent detail and color reproduction. It also supports gyro-based electronic image stabilization (EIS), which helps in capturing stable and blur-free videos. This makes it an ideal choice for users who frequently record videos or take photos in dynamic environments.
“Over the past few years, mobile phone cameras have become the main instrument for recording and sharing our everyday moments,” said Yongin Park, executive vice president of sensor business at Samsung Electronics. “With more pixels and advanced pixel technologies, Samsung ISOCELL Bright GW1 and GM2 will bring a new level of photography to today’s sleekest mobile devices that will enhance and help change the way we record our daily lives.”
These advancements in camera technology are not just about increasing the number of megapixels. They also focus on improving the overall image quality, color accuracy, and performance in various lighting conditions. This ensures that users can capture stunning photos and videos, regardless of the environment.
