A new type of modular robot system has been unveiled this month called the Roombot which has been developed to provide a system that is capable of transforming furniture into whatever its user might require.
EPFL scientists from the Biorobotics Laboratory (BIOROB) are responsible for developing the Roombots that can be used on their own to create furniture or used in conjunction with already existing furniture, to add functionality and features to it.
Perhaps being able to move already existing furniture around the room when required or transform it from a chair into a table depending on your requirements. “Eventually, all you’ll need to do is program the layout of a bedroom or a conference room, then let the modules do the work,” says Auke Ijspeert, head of the BIOROB. Watch the video below to hear its creator explained more about this very innovative and unique system for creating and reinventing furniture.
The Roombots modular robot system is still currently in the early stages of development and the researchers are currently developing systems for users to be able to control the robots effectively using voice or gesture commands. As more information is unveiled published regards the development of the unique Roombots system we will keep you updated as always.
