Onyx has unveiled a new E Ink smartwatch they have designed and built this week by showcasing a prototype equipped with a 1.56 inch E Ink display that only requires battery power when the screen is refreshed.
Allowing the display to remain on all the time but still not use any more battery power and offer a much longer battery life than when compared to the range of colour LCD equipped smartwatches currently being unveiled by manufacturers around the world, from the likes of Samsung, LG and Apple to name a few.
Onyx have also made their new smartwatch waterproof and equipped it with low energy Bluetooth connectivity to enable it to synchronise with your smartphone. Providing notifications of incoming calls and messages and also sending data to companion phone applications for tracking the number of steps you have taken.
The prototype smartwatch is equipped with three buttons on the right hand side that provide easy access to menus and functions. Watch the video below to see the new Onyx smartwatch in action and its features demonstrated thanks to Charbax from ARMdevices.
The Onyx E Ink Smartwatch is also equipped with GPS functionality and although the current hardware is only a prototype, the concept demonstrates how E Ink displays may be able to provide alternative low energy screens for wearable devices.
Unfortunately no information on pricing or a worldwide launch date has been unveiled as yet by Onyx, but as soon as information is announced we will keep you updated as always.
