We recently heard from Nokia that they had decided not to sell the new Nokia N9 in the US and UK, but now it would appear that a SIM free version of the Nokia N9 has appeared on Amazon, which would mean you would be able to buy it in the US after all.
According to the Amazon listing, the Nokia N9 is available SIM free for $500 for the 16GB model or $650 for the 64GB model, and it will apparently ship on the 23rd of September.
So whilst Nokia has decided not to sell the device in the US and the UK through mobile carriers, it looks like the Nokia N9 may be available through retailers like Amazon.
Features and Specifications of the Nokia N9
The Nokia N9 is a unique smartphone that runs on the MeeGo operating system, which sets it apart from the more common Android and iOS devices. The phone features a 3.9-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 480 x 854 pixels, providing vibrant colors and deep blacks. The device is powered by a 1GHz Cortex-A8 CPU and comes with 1GB of RAM, ensuring smooth performance for most tasks.
One of the standout features of the Nokia N9 is its design. The phone has a unibody polycarbonate shell that not only looks sleek but also feels sturdy in hand. The device is available in several colors, including black, cyan, and magenta, allowing users to choose a style that suits their personality.
Camera and Multimedia Capabilities
The Nokia N9 is equipped with an 8-megapixel rear camera that features Carl Zeiss optics, autofocus, and dual-LED flash. This makes it capable of capturing high-quality photos and videos, even in low-light conditions. The camera also supports 720p video recording at 30 frames per second, making it a versatile tool for capturing memories.
In terms of multimedia, the Nokia N9 supports a wide range of audio and video formats, including MP3, WAV, eAAC+, MP4, H.264, and WMV. The device also features Dolby Digital Plus and Dolby Headphone enhancements, providing an immersive audio experience whether you’re listening to music or watching videos.
Connectivity and Battery Life
The Nokia N9 offers a variety of connectivity options, including Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1, and NFC. The device also supports 3G networks, ensuring that you can stay connected on the go. The phone comes with a 1450mAh battery, which provides up to 11 hours of talk time on 2G and up to 7 hours on 3G. This should be sufficient for most users to get through a full day of use without needing to recharge.
Availability and Market Impact
While Nokia’s decision not to sell the N9 through carriers in the US and UK may have disappointed some fans, the availability of a SIM-free version on Amazon provides an alternative for those who are eager to get their hands on this unique device. The pricing of $500 for the 16GB model and $650 for the 64GB model is competitive, especially considering the phone’s unique features and design.
The Nokia N9’s release also highlights the company’s willingness to experiment with different operating systems and form factors, even as it faced stiff competition from other smartphone manufacturers. The device’s availability through retailers like Amazon could potentially open up new markets and opportunities for Nokia, allowing the company to reach a broader audience.
