Nikon has unveiled a new addition to their range of telephoto lenses with the availability of the new AF-S Nikkor 400mm f/2.8E FL ED VR lens that is now available to purchase for an eye-watering $12,000.
Nikon has designed the new 400mm telephoto lens to be 2lbs lighter than its previous model, making it more portable and easier to handle during extended shooting sessions. This reduction in weight is a significant improvement for professional photographers who often need to carry multiple lenses and equipment. The lens is now fitted with more enhanced autofocus exposure accuracy and speed, ensuring that photographers can capture fast-moving subjects with greater precision.
Advanced Optical Performance
Nikon explained in their press release this week: “The lens now contains two fluorite elements that, together with two Extra-Low Dispersion (ED) glass elements and Nano Crystal Coat, helps ensure outstanding performance with minimal chromatic aberration and flaring. This combination of advanced optical elements significantly improves image quality by reducing color fringing and ghosting, which are common issues in telephoto lenses. The Nano Crystal Coat further enhances image clarity by minimizing internal reflections, providing photographers with sharp and vibrant images even in challenging lighting conditions.
The internal construction of the lens comprises 16 elements in 12 groups, and features an electromagnetic diaphragm, similar to that employed in the AF-S NIKKOR 800mm f/5.6 lens.” The electromagnetic diaphragm mechanism allows for more precise aperture control, especially during high-speed continuous shooting. This feature is particularly beneficial for sports and wildlife photographers who need to maintain consistent exposure across a series of rapid shots.
Versatility and Compatibility
The AF-S Nikkor 400mm f/2.8E FL ED VR lens is not only designed for superior optical performance but also for versatility. It is compatible with Nikon’s range of teleconverters, which can extend the focal length of the lens without significantly compromising image quality. For instance, using the AF-S Teleconverter TC-14E III, photographers can achieve a focal length of 560mm while maintaining an aperture of f/4. This flexibility makes the lens suitable for a wide range of photographic applications, from sports and wildlife to aviation and even astrophotography.
Moreover, the lens features Nikon’s Vibration Reduction (VR) technology, which provides up to four stops of image stabilization. This is particularly useful when shooting handheld or in low-light conditions, as it helps to reduce camera shake and produce sharper images. The VR system also includes a SPORT mode, which is optimized for tracking fast-moving subjects, ensuring that photographers can capture dynamic action shots with ease.
