Last week we told you about a new smart lock, the Genie Smart Lock, which is designed to replace your door locks, and can be controlled by your smartphone.
The device will automatically unlock your door when you get home, and it will automatically lock your door when you leave your house, so you never have to worry about whether you locked your door or not when you go out.
The Genie Smart Lock was created by Joel MacAndrew, and after we ran the initial story, Joel contacted us again to let us know more details about his invention.
According to Joel, the major problems with smart locks is battery life, but with the this new smart lock, Joel has managed to overcome this problem, and his device will give you an impressive battery life of up to 12 months.
“In developing the Genie Smart Lock we knew that we had to overcome the battery life issues faced by our competitors. A battery life of 2 weeks – 3 months was simply not acceptable, nor was it an option to make the Genie Smart Lock less user friendly to conserve battery power. This is when the Genie Hub was born. The Genie Hub allows users all of the benefits of a wifi and bluetooth smart lock while only using the power of a bluetooth smart lock.”
Joel created the Genie Hub, which works in conjunction with the Smart Lock, and gives you all the benefits of WiFi, but the actual smart lock only uses Bluetooth LE, this means that you still get all the functions as if WiFi was built into the actual lock, but with the extra battery life of a Bluetooth LE device, the diagram below explains how it works.
The Genie Smart Lock can also be used as a Bluetooth LE device without the need for the smart hub, this new smartphone enabled lock is available to pre-order for $249 at the link below.
