Magellan has announced a new GPS device that will help drivers get to where they need to go and save money on the way. The GPS device is called the SmartGPS 5390 and it uses connectivity from your smartphone to do some pretty cool things. That connectivity to the smartphone happens thanks to an app that runs on iOS or Android devices.
With the app, running the GPS will give traffic details along your route. It will also offer things like gas prices at stations nearby, restaurants nearby, and other items. One of the cool parts is that with the restaurant listings also comes access to Yelp and Foursquare so you can see if the place is well liked before going.
The app connectivity also allows you to enter a destination one time and then share it between the GPS device, smartphone, PC, or tablet. Since it uses the connectivity you already pay for from your smartphone, there is no subscription required for the GPS services. I do wonder how much data it will consume on the smartphone. High data use for the app could run you into overages if you don’t have much data on your plan.
