As always, Apple iPhone 6 and 6 Plus sales broke all previous records, with the sales totalling 10 million in the opening weekend. But, it’s not just Apple, the accessories makers are also seeing a bump in their sales.
Following the launch of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, the accessory sales have reached a record $249 million in just two weeks, a 43 percent increase from the prior two weeks, reports NPD Group.
“New iPhone form factors always provide a short-term boost to traffic and volume to the consumer electronics market, but it’s the accessory purchases that keep the momentum going,” said Stephen Baker, vice president of industry analysis at The NPD Group. “Case sales specifically, and accessory sales in general, remain an excellent proxy in measuring the long-term demand for a phone.”
The accessory sales are way higher than the last years iPhone 5S and 5C, which totalled $195 million in two weeks — a rise of 17 percent over the prior two weeks.
Case makers usually create the accessories for the unreleased devices, either when they get an early look at the dimensions or through leaked information — thanks to the rumor mill. Plus, we’ve been hearing a lot about how delicate the devices are. Several iPhone users usually prefer to keep their devices in cases, just in case to protect their devices from accidental drops and damages.
“The new iPhone releases, and the subsequent mobile accessory purchases that result from them, are one of the key opportunities helping to set the stage for a strong fourth quarter and holiday season,” said Baker.
