HP recently dropped the price of its TouchPad tablet to $99, when it announced it would no longer be making the device, and now one running Google’s Android OS has appeared on eBay.
According to the owner of the device, it was purchased from Best Buy, and when the tablet was turned on it was found to be running Android 2.2 Froyo, have a look at the video of it in action below.
Background on HP TouchPad and WebOS
The HP TouchPad was initially launched in July 2011, running HP’s proprietary WebOS operating system. Despite its innovative features and the potential of WebOS, the TouchPad struggled to compete with other tablets in the market, particularly Apple’s iPad. The lack of apps and developer support for WebOS contributed to its poor sales performance. Consequently, HP decided to discontinue the TouchPad and significantly reduced its price to $99, leading to a surge in demand as consumers rushed to grab the heavily discounted device.
Android on HP TouchPad: A Unique Find
The discovery of an HP TouchPad running Android 2.2 Froyo is particularly intriguing because the device was never officially released with Android. This raises several questions about how Android ended up on the tablet. One possibility is that it was a prototype or a test unit that somehow made its way into the consumer market. Another theory is that it could have been modified by an enthusiast or developer who managed to install Android on the device.
The video below shows the HP TouchPad running Android 2.2 Froyo, demonstrating its functionality and performance. This version of Android, known as Froyo, was released in May 2010 and brought several improvements over its predecessors, including better performance, support for Adobe Flash 10.1, and enhanced security features.
There really aren’t many details about how the HP TouchPad came with Android 2.2 Froyo loaded on it, you can find out more information over at y.
