Anyone interested in learning more about the development and creation of the excellent PlayStation 4 Pro 4K game, Horizon Zero Dawn, are sure to enjoy a tech interview with the game’s developers Guerrilla Games. This interview is embedded below.
The team over at Digital Foundry were able to spend a day with Guerrilla Games in Amsterdam, discussing the development of the game, and conducting an in-depth interview with tech engineer Giliam de Carpentier to discuss developing for the new PlayStation 4 Pro hardware.
The Development Journey
Horizon Zero Dawn won the award for Best Original Game at the Game Critics Awards in 2015 and 2016. Developed exclusively for the PlayStation 4 and launched during March 2017, the development of Horizon Zero Dawn started back in 2011. Game director Mathijs de Jonge considered it “the most risky” idea of those that were pitched at the time. Guerrilla Games emphasizes trial and error as the basis for playing the game, choosing not to implement a tutorial. This approach encourages players to explore and learn the mechanics organically, which has been praised for its immersive experience.
The game is set in a post-apocalyptic world where robotic creatures dominate the landscape. Players take on the role of Aloy, a young hunter with a mysterious past, who embarks on a journey to uncover her origins and the fate of the ancient world. The game’s open-world design allows for extensive exploration, with a variety of environments ranging from lush forests to arid deserts.
Technical Achievements
One of the standout features of Horizon Zero Dawn is its stunning visual fidelity, particularly on the PlayStation 4 Pro. The game utilizes a dynamic resolution system to maintain a consistent frame rate while delivering 4K visuals. This was a significant technical challenge, as explained by Giliam de Carpentier in the interview. The team had to optimize the game’s engine to take full advantage of the PlayStation 4 Pro’s hardware capabilities, including its enhanced GPU and increased memory bandwidth.
The game’s AI system is another technical marvel. The robotic creatures exhibit complex behaviors, reacting to the player’s actions in real-time. This required sophisticated programming and extensive testing to ensure that the AI felt both challenging and fair. The developers also implemented a robust physics engine to handle the interactions between the player, the environment, and the robotic creatures.
In addition to its technical achievements, Horizon Zero Dawn also features a compelling narrative. The story delves into themes of identity, technology, and the relationship between humanity and nature. The game’s lore is rich and detailed, with numerous collectibles and side quests that provide additional context and depth to the main storyline.
