Master modder and Nintendo 64 and Gamecube fan Hailrazer has this week released details of his latest project which has packed a Nintendo 64 Into GameCube, combining the two systems into one. This innovative project showcases Hailrazer’s exceptional skills in hardware modification and his passion for classic gaming consoles. The Intricacies of the Modding Process
“I have put a N64 into a Nintendo Gamecube Gameboy Player. It required cutting down the N64 board. Bending the cart slot, folding the expansion pak, re-wiring a lot of things like the controller ports, and adding an N64 Everdrive 64. I modified the Gamecube so the N64 and Gamecube run off the same power/audio/video wires.”
Hailrazer’s project is not just a simple case of fitting one console into another; it involves a meticulous process of hardware modification. Cutting down the N64 board is a delicate task that requires precision to ensure that the board remains functional while fitting into the GameCube’s compact space. Bending the cartridge slot and folding the expansion pak are additional challenges that demand careful handling to avoid damaging the components.
Re-wiring the controller ports is another critical aspect of the project. This step ensures that the controllers for both the N64 and GameCube can be used seamlessly. The inclusion of the N64 Everdrive 64, a flashcart that allows users to load games from an SD card, adds a modern twist to the classic console, providing a convenient way to access a vast library of N64 games.
Combining Power, Audio, and Video
One of the most impressive feats of this project is the integration of power, audio, and video systems. By modifying the GameCube to run both the N64 and GameCube off the same power, audio, and video wires, Hailrazer has created a unified system that simplifies the user experience. This integration means that users do not need to switch between different power supplies or audio/video outputs when switching between consoles.
The video output is particularly noteworthy, as it ensures that the N64 games can be enjoyed with the same visual quality as they would on the original console. This attention to detail highlights Hailrazer’s commitment to preserving the authentic gaming experience while enhancing it with modern conveniences.
