Google has released their new Wear OS by Google Developer Preview 2 at this year’s Google I/O Developer Conference. The company changed the name of the OS from Android Wear to Wear OS back in March.
The new software brings a range of new features to Wear OS smartwatches, this includes an updated Google Assistant and more.
New Features and Enhancements
“At Google I/O, we launched the Wear OS by Google developer preview 2. This update added support for Actions on Google (AoG) and more power-related enhancements including a new battery saver mode.
One of the most notable features in this update is the enhanced Google Assistant. The updated Assistant is now more intuitive and capable of providing proactive suggestions and personalized information based on the user’s habits and preferences. This makes the smartwatch experience more seamless and integrated with daily activities.
Additionally, the new battery saver mode is designed to extend the battery life of Wear OS devices significantly. When activated, this mode limits the functionality of the smartwatch to essential features, ensuring that users can get the most out of their devices even when the battery is running low. This is particularly useful for users who rely on their smartwatches for extended periods without access to a charger.
Developer Tools and Compatibility
This developer preview includes updated Android Emulator images and a downloadable system image for the Huawei Watch 2 Bluetooth or Huawei Watch 2 Classic Bluetooth. This preview release is intended for developers only and not for daily or consumer use. Therefore, the preview release is only available via manual download and flash. Please refer to the release notes for known issues before downloading and flashing your device.”
The inclusion of updated Android Emulator images allows developers to test their applications in a simulated environment that closely mimics the actual hardware. This is crucial for ensuring that apps perform optimally on Wear OS devices. The downloadable system image for the Huawei Watch 2 models provides a real-world testing platform for developers to fine-tune their applications and take advantage of the new features and enhancements.
Moreover, the developer preview introduces support for Actions on Google (AoG), enabling developers to create more interactive and engaging experiences for users. AoG allows developers to integrate their services with Google Assistant, providing users with voice-activated controls and responses. This opens up new possibilities for app functionality and user interaction on Wear OS devices.
